Running Accomplishments:

I started running in the fall of 2007.  I truly believe I was inspired to start running and I have seen some very big blessings come my way because of following that inspiration.

Ran Boston Marathon 2013 & 2014.  My favorite PRs:  2011 at the SG 1/2 and 5K where I ran the 5K in 22:22.    2013 Nebo 1/2 (downhill) 1:36:15

Short-Term Running Goals:

Long-Term Running Goals:

Running throughout life with Tom. Staying healthy and happy.

Learn from others, learn from myself, work hard, do my best, enjoy!

On running and on life.....

On occasion we need to make a second effort - and a third effort, and a fourth effort, and as many degrees of effort as may be required to accomplish what we strive to achieve.

:o(

Check back later for details.  Gotta go right now.

OK, here's the details.  I'm writing them in purple so they look happy and cheerful!  :o)  Knee started hurting at about 2.2 miles.  I stopped to stretch about 3 or 4 times but had to walk home after 3.2 miles.

I've tried lots and lots of things to help my IT band, but I think what it needs more than anything else is REST!  So I think, (unless anyone who really knows tells me differently), that I have ran my last run until October 4th.  I feel like that at this point anything else I put on my knee is going to be a negative impact on it.  If I rest it I will probably be slower than I would have liked to be, but I will hopefully be able to cross the finish line and not just the starting line.  I no longer have any goals but to CROSS THE FISNISH LINE...HOPEFULLY IT BAND PAIN FREE!

I'm not quite sure how I will do emotionally by stopping my running at this point, but I think I will take the negative emotional aspects better now than if I am not able to complete this marathon on race day.

I feel good about my decision but I welcome any advice or feedback.  I may put this on the discussion board for further advice also.  However, in the end, I will follow my own feelings...they always seem to know best.

Smiles  :o)

Look at my blog. I am also having one of those moments. How is your knee? Have a good day. JULIE.

From Cal on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 15:18:02

Don't worry about missing out on your runs right now. Just get that knee healthy. #1 Priority. I assume you're icing multiple times a day, right? Hang in there, you'll be fine!

I'd go see Dr BRady. He's a sports medicine chiropractor in Provo. Please go see him. I would have never gone if Michelle haddn't twisted my arm, and I am SO glad I did. Hang in there :)

Kim you will not loose anything fitness wise (my opinion), you have already put in the miles so you might surprise yourself come race day! During the next week just take it easy and then go through each mile of the race in your mind and try and think about what you want out of each mile, almost like you are running the race in your mind. That might help with you not running the next week. I have been doing this each day just trying to get a race strategy and prepare my mind for the race...

You have already prepared your body so now its time to get your head into it, so to speak.

Keep your down:-D

You're getting great advice from everyone Kim. Like the others said...you've already put in the core work so your plan to rest until the race is the safest way to go. Like we talked about you could try the elliptical and/or bike and see if the IT band is happy with that. I think you can still have a super experience for your first marathon!

You said, "in the end, I will follow my own feelings...they always seem to know best."

"I say that what you say is what I say." (Spot, Newsies)

I always welcome and consider advice, and take advantage of it often, but in the end I always try to trust and go with my own feelings.

Wouldn't it be great if there was somewhere we could just cast all our burdens, and sadness, and worries and just find peace? ;o)

I agree - you've got plenty in the bank right now. It just might happen that the permission to not run leads to an urge to have a little 3 or 4 miler next week, just to stretch out the legs -- or not. Either way, breathe and rest and do not be afraid. Have a good time.

From lisa on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 18:04:29

Kim - I really feel for you. It is so huge to "just" finish the marathon. You can do it!! We did a lot of walking the week before the marathon just to keep things loose. Who knows if that was good or not. I really wish I could be done to St George to watch everyone finish.

From Jody on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 23:16:14

Time off right now is not a bad thing, rest is a good thing. Use this time to do the good things and just let you body heal.

From Christi on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 23:50:36

Hey Kim- Sorry you're having IT issues. You've worked so hard & I'm sure this must be frustrating. HOWEVER- I agree that you have laid an excellent fitness foundation over the last few months. Its OK to rest now, you will be strong & ready on race day! See you soon!

From Teena on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 00:07:49

Yep, follow your gut!! That is unless it tells you to run anytime soon!! :) As far as the cross training, if your knee is like mine, the elliptical will still bother it, but an upright bike will not.

Just think about how wonderful it is going to be for you to cross the finish line at SG. You have worked, struggled, prayed, and done everything within your power ... He'll take care of the rest.

Hang in there. Watch some fun running movies and enjoy yourself!! :)

From britta on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:16:25

I ditto teena when she says... "He'll take care of the rest".

My first marathon I couldn't run the week before. I actually could barely walk. Long story short I made it to the start line and finish line and didn't even feel any pain during the race. (Well not anymore than anyone else.)

REST!!!! You are going to do great. You have worked so hard and he knows that it is important to you.

From tarzan on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:22:09

You won't gain any fitness these last two weeks - so rest is probably the best. If you can roll the IT band (or massage it) and take Ibuprofen regularly, that might help the pain and inflammation. A couple of years I ran with the IT band supports that you can buy at running stores and found them to be helpful on hilly courses.
